AWS-CWI Examination: Open Code Book Exam
The AWS D1.1 Exam (Code book examination) is part of the certification process for becoming an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). The exam covers knowledge of welding processes, welding metallurgy, and welding inspection.
The following is an overview of the exam structure:

- Part A – Fundamentals: This is a closed book exam consisting of 150 multiple choice questions. You will have 2 hours to complete this exam. The exam covers welding processes, welding metallurgy, and welding symbols.
- Part B – Practical: This is an open book exam consisting of 46 multiple choice questions and 10 visual inspection questions. You will have 2 hours to complete this exam. The exam covers welding inspection, including visual inspection, measurement, and evaluation of discontinuities.
- Part C – Code Book: This is an open book exam consisting of 50-60 multiple choice questions. You will have 2 hours to complete this exam. The exam covers the AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel.
To pass the exam and become an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), you must achieve a minimum passing score on each of the three parts. The passing score is 72% for Parts A and B and 60% for Part C.
